Kids Martial Arts
Our youth Kung Fu program is a blend of many styles of martial arts with the principles and philosophies of Jeet Kune Do at it’s core. Our goal is to give our students a broad spectrum understanding of martial arts and their potential by incorporating striking, grappling, tumbling and weapons elements in our programs.
One of the main differences between our program and a different kids martial arts program (EX: Kids Karate, Kids Tae Kwon Do, etc) is that we do not do competitions. This allows for the student to learn at their own unique pace without the added pressures of competing against other schools.
We have 3 different kids martial arts programs. Each program is tailored to best help the OKC martial arts students within their age group.
PeeWees Kung Fu (Ages 4-6) This program heavily focuses on listening skills, coordination, and basic Kung Fu movements. It is an intro to martial arts program designed to prepare the students to move up to our kids program as they get older. The listening skills and physical skills they acquire will give them the confidence to pursue other activities in the future as well.
Kids Kung Fu (Ages 7-11) In this program the students start to learn more about the movements and philosophies of Kung Fu. They are shown how to use their Kung Fu skills in more creative ways and expand their understanding of the art. The drills and exercises become more challenging and the information taught is at a higher level.
Teens Kung Fu (Ages 11-17) This class is designed to explore Kung Fu movements and philosophies at the highest level. This class is tailored to help teens with the issues they face everyday and learn how to overcome those obstacles. Our goal is to give teens the tools they need to build a solid foundation to become a strong, confident and trustworthy adult.
The 3 Rules at Odyssey Martial Arts OKC
1: Listen to Trusted Adults
This is the first rule because it’s the most important and it helps guide the other rules. Trusted adults are here to keep you safe and help you. We should listen to them! In Kung Fu this is important because the first step to learning a new technique is to listen to your instructor as they’re teaching it. This helps the student acquire new skills and protect themselves and their training partner. Improving our listening skills translates to life outside of the Kung Fu class as well.
2: Don’t Hurt Anyone
Kung Fu is about protection and self development. It is not about fighting. We focus on being a positive influence on the people around us and using our Kung Fu to make our world a better place. The last thing we want to do is hurt someone else. We even learn ways to protect the person trying to do us harm in the higher levels similar to how a parent would protect their child throwing a tantrum (we’ve all been there at some point). This is further developed through partner drills and exercises. We learn how to practice Kung Fu with another person while keeping each other safe.
3: Have Fun!
Kung Fu is fun! When we do a good job listening, nobody gets hurt and the result is we all have FUN! Students learn that listening to their trusted adults gives them positive experiences which reinforces this behavior in school and at home.
